Oh and may I respectfully point out that the middle finger means little in the UK. We use the first and second finger combined as I am sure you have seen in pictures of Churchhill who was being very naughty when he used to do it as everyone in the UK knew what he was actually saying..... The gesture came about in the 14th century when during the 100 years war with the French (which actually only lasted 30 years ... its a long story) our archers with their long bows were so deadly against the French knights ( soldiers on horses as opposed to darkness) that when the French captured any they would cut off their 1st and 2nd fingers so that they could not draw a bow ( not drawing on a piece of paper but pulling the bow string back to loose off an arrow) . So every time there was a battle our archers would hold up their 1st and 2nd fingers toward the French to show that they have all their fingers and are able to draw a bow (again, not drawing on a piece of paper but pulling the bow string back) This gesture has come down from history now to mean FUCK OFF when gesticulated at another person. I do hope that you feel you are now culturally slightly more enriched and will stop being an obnoxious ass (as in the UK meaning....donkey )
